What Are The Black Stains On My Roof?
The damaging black stains on asphalt shingles are caused by a type of algae called Gloeocapsa Magma which, in recent years, has begun to thrive in our warm, humid region. The algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is added in asphalt shingles making your roof the perfect environment for it to grow. Rain spreads the algae down the roof causing the black streaks ( which is a protective sheath created to shield the algae from UV rays) to spread at a rapid rate. These streaks are not only an eye-sore but ultimately will cause the shingles to fail prematurely by not allowing the shingles to reflect heat properly.
A Large Number Of Roofs Are Replaced Due To It's Appearance.
This is not because of their functionality. A great number of roofs in this area don't need to be replaced, only a simple cleaning is needed. Just as mold and mildew can grow on your house, mold and algae can land and grow on your roof due to airborne spores. Replacing your roof because of this algae is like replacing your house instead of having it cleaned; it simply doesn't make sense.
Some roofing contractors that don't know what are causing the black streaks are saying it's the asphalt showing through the shingles or it's from the nails rusting or water stains. Unfortunately, some contractors may know it's algae, but tell you cleaning it will damaging the shingles. Either way, they may tell you that the roof needs replaced. If your shingles are in good shape a new roof is not the answer. Talbot Pro-Wash can kill and safely remove the algae without damaging the shingles using a no pressure cleaning technique(recommended by shingle manufacturers).
Roof Cleaning Is Recommended By Shingle Manufacturers.
GAF-Elk and the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) recommend a no pressure cleaning technique, using recommended cleaners to restore shingles being damaged from roof algae, followed by a no pressure rinse. We use the cleaners and methods recommended by these companies, for a safe and damage free roof cleaning. If your shingles are still in good shape but have roof algae on them, having your roof cleaned by Talbot Pro-Wash will allow you to get the full life out of your shingles, saving you thousands of dollars.
